Solidarity - Dye Printed Silk Scarf
The concept for this piece was to touch on the solidarity that is necessary between women to put a stop to the ever present rape culture in our society. In researching this, I found that based on statistics from RAINN (Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network), one in four women in the United States will be sexually abused or assaulted during their lifetime. In contrast, out of every 1,000 reported rapes, only 57 reports lead to an arrest, and out of that number only 6 rapists are charged and convicted. These numbers are staggering, disturbing, and point to a serious problem within our society. Victims of sexual assault are often stigmatized, and as a result remain silenced, blamed for being assaulted, and shamed. As a culture, it is imperative for this stigma to be destroyed. In order for victims to heal we must stand together, and acknowledge that we are all interconnected. If this aspect of our culture remains silenced no change will come.
